Alamo Drafthouse has dedicated the Alamo Drafthouse Las Colinas theater to the John Carpenter Cinema in honor of the legendary filmmaker John Carpenter.
Since opening in 2018, and given its proximity to John W. Carpenter Freeway, named for the Texas businessman and agriculturalist who died in 1959, Alamo Drafthouse Las Colinas has always honored a very different John Carpenter – the legendary filmmaker behind Halloween, The Thing, and Escape from New York. The lobby’s state-of-the-art interchangeable photo opp wall features an homage to Big Trouble in Little China alongside a replica alien from They Live, and a complete John Carpenter-themed Mondo poster gallery lines the hallways.
Now the theater has officially carried an alternate name in honor of the legendary filmmaker Mr. Carpenter. Bill DiGaetano, CEO of Alamo Drafthouse North Texas revealed a plaque proclaiming the theater to be the “John Carpenter Cinema” and ribbon cutting ceremony with one of Mr. Carpenter’s most iconic creations – Halloween’s Michael Myers.
The plaque dedicated to Carpenter reads:
JOHN CARPENTER CINEMA
“Everyone’s entitled to one good scare.”
From babysitter slashers to pirate ghosts to shapeshifting monsters to subliminal aliens, writer/director/composer John Carpenter has entertained and terrified generations of film lovers with genre classics like Assault on Precinct 13, Halloween, The Fog, Escape From New York, The Thing, Christine, Big Trouble in Little China, and They Live. Because of his incalculable influence on cinema, as of Thursday, May 25th, 2023, this Alamo Drafthouse Cinema shall hereby and forevermore be known as the John Carpenter Cinema.
Additionally, Mr. Carpenter was in attendance for two screenings of his cult classic films, The Thing and They Live, and participated in an extended film introduction ahead of each film.
