Re-releases of nostalgic classics are a great cash grab. Throw in some new artwork and maybe a steelbook, then we have a collector’s edition. Us physical media collectors are like moths to a flame. The same content is sold to us over and over, except somehow the packaging looks shinier. One of the biggest offenders is Evil Dead which has multiple 4K releases in a short period of time, but we will keep buying. E.T. THE EXTRA-TERRESTRIAL is also a big-time offender, but this 40th-anniversary edition goes all out to guarantee sales with multiple exclusives.

In 2017, E.T. THE EXTRA-TERRESTRIAL made its 4K debut to stunning results. I still own the digibook and have no plans of letting this go. Like millions of fans, this movie still means a lot to me, and plan on revisiting it for years to come. Just five years later, the same disc is being repackaged for the 40th anniversary, but with a couple of new goodies.

There are only two new features on here: one is a retrospective and the other is Steve Spielberg‘s reflection on his career and E.T. THE EXTRA-TERRESTRIAL at the TCM Classic Film Festival. Luckily, most of the previous special features from earlier releases have been ported over including the cast reunion from the 20th-anniversary premiere. There are new artwork and gift set exclusives like steelbooks, tin totes, and retro figures. The artwork across all the different exclusives leaves much to be desired as they look like generic Happy Meals, but luckily we buy physical media for the movie itself, right?

However, this new release is mostly cosmetic. The 4K disc is relatively no different, with the same gorgeous transfer and multiple audio tracks to choose from including the DTS:X mix.

Much of the cast is still working and present in the horror genre, especially Dee Wallace and Henry Thomas. Thomas is pretty much in everything Mike Flanagan makes nowadays. Drew Barrymore is now an awkward talk show host but has created a legacy of iconic roles in all genres and remains as one of America’s most beloved actresses.

This latest 4K release of E.T. THE EXTRA-TERRESTRIAL is a great pickup for those who never upgraded, but only completists and die-hard fans should double dip as I’m sure this won’t be the last time it gets a home video release.
