Four years after the events of last year’s Halloween Kills, Laurie is living with her granddaughter Allyson (Andi Matichak) and is finishing writing her memoir. Michael Myers hasn’t been seen since. Laurie, after allowing the specter of Michael to determine and drive her reality for decades, has decided to liberate herself from fear and rage and embrace life.
Returning to the final installment of David Gordon Green’s Halloween trilogy is Kyle Richards. As a child, audiences were introduced to her as Lindsey Wallace in the 1978 Halloween movie that started it all. She reprised the role of Lindsey again in last year’s Halloween Kills, and is back again in HALLOWEEN ENDS.
For the release of HALLOWEEN ENDS, Nightmarish Conjurings’ Dolores Quintana chatted with Kyle Richards, where they discussed her character’s evolution between Halloween Kills and Halloween Ends, how she came to be involved in acting, and what she hopes fans take away from this final chapter.
How did you get into acting in the first place?
Kyle Richards: Well, my sisters were in acting. My mom had studied at the Academy of Dramatic Arts here in New York City, and then she put my sisters in when they were little. By the time my sister Kim was on Nanny and the Professor, I came along. I was born and my mom would drag me to the auditions taking my sisters. I was very shy, and my mom thought, well, maybe I’ll push Kyle into the business so she’s not the only sister left out. She didn’t want me to feel left out and she thought it would help me overcome my shyness. So she started dragging me to auditions when I was about three and I thought every audition was a doctor’s office and would freak out. I still don’t like a doctor’s office, and I still don’t like auditions. [laughs] Years later, though, I’m still doing it.
There you go. What was it like to come back to the Halloween franchise?
Kyle Richards: It was so exciting. When I got the call that they wanted me in Halloween Kills, I could not have been more excited to come back [and] reprise my role after all of these years. The idea that I’ve been there since the very beginning at eight years old, all the way to the very end, at this point in my life is just very exciting, and very few people can say that they’ve been playing the same character this many years.
Kyle Richards: That’s exactly where I was coming from. In Halloween Kills, my character was in a very different place and that’s why she had her moment with Michael Myers, and she took him on and she survived. But in Halloween Ends, I was added in. They wrote me into the script later so I had a small supporting role. I think where Lindsey is at now is she’s supporting Laurie right now and trying to help her get through this difficult time. She’s lost her daughter. Allyson lost her mom. So I came from that point of view. I want to be there to support them, and I feel like, for me, it’s also Kyle being there to support Jamie in her last and final movie, so it just made sense to me.
And do you intend on taking more horror roles if they come?
Kyle Richards: I’ve done a lot of horror movies. I actually like being in horror movies. I like doing all of it though. I love drama. I love comedy. I probably do more comedy than anything. I love all of it. I love producing and I don’t always love being on a reality show, but it’s been good to me and I do have fun doing that too. So I’m just doing it all and being a mom, which is my most important job.
That’s a great perspective to have. What are your hopes and your plans for the future as an actress?
Kyle Richards: I would like to continue acting. I’m working on something coming up soon. I’m also producing a one-hour drama that I’m really excited about but just really this business has been good to me. I’ve been in it since I’m a baby. My entire life and I hope to continue to be till the very end like Betty White. [laughs] I just want to keep acting and producing and continuing entertaining.
So you have gotten into producing. Are there any projects that you have coming up that you can talk about?
Kyle Richards: I can’t really talk about but it is a one-hour drama with a very big network that I’m working on a project with now. So that’s exciting. I really enjoyed producing “American Woman” and being behind the camera and not being in front of the camera at all. People really loved it. It had such a great reaction and I just had so much fun doing that. It was great that on “The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills”, they covered that and that I could sort of capture that moment because it was really a special moment that I’m really proud of.
And so, I’ll ask that question. What’s it like being a ‘Real Housewife’?
Kyle Richards: Very challenging. It’s challenging. It’s a very different world. Your life is out there for everyone to scrutinize and weigh in on and it’s a lot more stressful than acting or producing where you get to keep your private life private. So that’s the challenging part. The thing that’s hard is the show has been really good to me and allowed me to do my other projects. So the times I want to walk away, I think they’re so good to me. They’re letting me do my movies, and my other things and they’re supporting me, so I just end up staying and doing both.
Kyle Richards: Well, in the very beginning, I think it was weird because they didn’t really focus on the fact that I was an actor my whole life. Then people started to know me for me, and then I became so known as Kyle, and my family and everything that people kind of forgot that I was an actor. And then I started getting back into it, people would want to meet me, but they were fans of the show and me, and they wanted to ask a million questions. I started thinking, am I just here to talk about the show? What’s happening here? But then I decided, if this is gonna happen and I’m gonna get into the room, I’m gonna make something of it then.
So that’s when I got into producing. I was like okay, I’ve got their attention. I have an idea and I sold them a show. That’s how “American Woman” came about and that’s how the next project that I’m working on came about. So, that opened doors after that to my acting again, because it was talked about on “American Woman” that I was a child actor and an actor my whole life. It’s opened a lot of doors, and I’m just grateful. I really love this business and it’s what I’m meant to be doing.
Is there anything you’d like the fans to take from your work or from HALLOWEEN ENDS?
Kyle Richards: I think with HALLOWEEN ENDS, the diehard fans don’t want it to ever end, but I think they’re going to love this movie. I think they’re going to be shocked. I think they’re going to be thrilled and they’re just going to be very excited. Be prepared.
