In HOTEL TRANSYLVANIA: TRANSFORMANIA, the final chapter of the Hotel Transylvania series, Van Helsing’s (Jim Gaffigan) ‘Monsterification Ray’ has gone haywire and Drac (Brian Hull) and his monster pals are all transformed into humans, and Johnny (Andy Samberg) becomes a monster! In their new mismatched bodies, Drac, stripped of his powers, and an exuberant, Johnny, loving life as a monster, must team up and race across the globe to find a cure before it’s too late and before they drive each other crazy. With help from Mavis (Selena Gomez) and the hilariously human Drac Pack, the heat is on to find a way to switch themselves back before their transformations become permanent.
Recently, Nightmarish Conjurings took part in the global press conference for the release of HOTEL TRANSYLVANIA: TRANSFORMANIA, which featured voice actors Andy Samberg, Selena Gomez, Keegan-Michael Key, David Spade, and Fran Drescher. During the conference, they discussed everything from the importance of being true to yourself and what they will most about the franchise coming to an end.
Over the course of ten years and four movies, we have watched as these talented actors have brought these wonderful animated outsiders to life. When discussing the real-life struggles kids may have with fitting in, actors Selena Gomez and Fran Drescher dished out some important advice.
“I could give you the ‘believe in yourself’ kind of answer, but I mean, I think it’s a challenge, right? Every day you wake up and sometimes you can’t sit there and make a choice, sometimes you do feel those feelings,” Gomez explained. “And I think it’s important to take moments and breaks from social media, personally. I think it’s just nice to be present and be with yourself for a bit. But it doesn’t mean that you need to have a lot of friends and a lot of people around to be cool. I have four friends and I think we’re the coolest [Laughs].”
“I think that the most attractive thing you can be is yourself and not give in to peer pressure, not feel like you have to be like anybody else so you have to twist yourself into a pretzel because you think that’s what somebody else expects you to be. I think that every single day,” stated Drescher. “The more you practice self-confidence in loving exactly who you are and doing exactly what makes your heart sing and nothing else, then you’re on the right path to living a successful life, successful in a sense of being happy and making kindness and compassion your compass is also something that brings value to your life and to those you touch.”
Another character that gets to experience a whole new side to him is that of Griffin. For the first time, we get to see who Griffin is in the flesh! When discussing the character, actor David Spade explained Griffin’s transformation.
“First of all, I would like to say I love that I got to do these four movies with all these people. It was such a fun time and I get so many nice comments from so many different older, younger people about watching them together. And it’s been a blast. I just wanted to get that out there because it was a cool thing to be a part of.
Having Griffin being not seen was kind of interesting. The whole time I’m just floating glasses and it was nice to be a full-on character that was relating to other people. And I think that’s going to be really fun for kids. It’s just a fun, visual thing. [W]hen you see these jokes and you see them written on the page and then when they add the animation, the jokes are like three times better because there’s a joke behind you, there’s a joke over here, and it fleshes it out so much that the movie turns into just more and more fun. It’s just so clever when you see what they can do. We’re adding one layer and what they do to it makes it even better.”
Even though it’s sad to see this franchise ending, it’s brought a lot of joy and happiness to its adoring fans. As the conference came to a close, each actor gave insight into what they would miss most about being part of this beloved franchise.
“I’ll miss Eunice. I love her,” explained Drescher. “I love the way they drew her, I love her look, and I love that she is a bit of a matriarch to the monsters. She gets wound up and screams a lot but for the most part, she really cares about Mavis and her family and her husband, Frank, too. I will miss my character, Eunice.”
“I’m gonna miss the final products that we always see. The movies are really done on such a high level and it’s the rhythm of the movies and the spirit behind them that really kind of moves me,” explained Keegan-Michael Key. “In a way, I’m saying I’m going to miss seeing them because if indeed this is the last one, I’m going to miss seeing the new ones come out cause they’re always really, really well done.”
“I don’t like to admit that it’s over, you know? If we say it’s done, we’re just caving to Sony, you know?” laughed Samberg. “I’ll miss it all. It’s been such a fun thing to do. I’ll miss the schwag bags, I’ll miss the junkets, I’ll miss the recording sessions…”
“I didn’t enjoy working with Andy at all,” laughed Gomez. “I remember I was really excited to meet Andy and David because I’ve watched SNL growing up. The first time being able to sit down with Andy, he made it so fun and easy. And if anything, he’s helped me relax more in interviews and feel a little bit normal. He’s also had my back, I will never forget cause they asked me like a dating question or something and I don’t do those and Andy answered for me, it was nice.”
“I do like when [the films] come out,” explained Slade. “[You] do one and you’re waiting for it to come out to see if it works and it’s nice to be a part of something that works. And when it worked, it was fun. And then you’re there already talking about another one and people are like, is there going to be another one and you go, yeah, we’re working on it, it’s coming out soon. Then that comes out and you see it and you go, oh good it’s funny again. Then there’s like, oh, there’s gonna be another one. And to have it stop is kind of a bummer but I’m glad we got the fourth one. I’m glad they all were good quality and if that’s where they have to stop, that’s where they have to stop.”
Amazon Studios will release HOTEL TRANSYLVANIA: TRANSFORMANIA on Prime Video globally on January 14, 2022.
