Recently, Nightmarish Conjurings had the opportunity to attend the press conference for the upcoming animated superhero series INVINCIBLE. During the event, we chatted with INVINCIBLE creator Robert Kirkman as well as actors Zazie Beetz and Gillian Jacobs who lend their voices to the character of Amber Bennett and Eve, respectively.
INVINCIBLE is an hour-long, adult animated superhero show that revolves around seventeen-year-old Mark Grayson (Steven Yeun), who’s just like every other guy his age – except that his father is the most powerful superhero on the planet, Omni Man (J.K. Simmons). But as Mark develops powers of his own, he discovers that his father’s legacy may not be as heroic as it seems. INVINCIBLE also includes the voice talents of Sandra Oh (“Killing Eve”), Seth Rogen (This is the End), Gillian Jacobs (Come Play) Andrew Rannells (Black Monday, Girls) Zazie Beetz (Deadpool 2) and more.
I’ll admit, until recently, I was not familiar with INVINCIBLE; though I was very aware of its creator considering his other famous comic, The Walking Dead, was made into one of the most acclaimed live-action horror series. When speaking to Kirkman he discussed what fans who were new to INVINCIBLE could expect:
“This is a superhero story that has a beginning, middle, and an end. It’s the story of Martin Grayson’s journey and to his life as a superhero, and you’re going to get to see him grow and change and evolve over time in a way that you’ll never see Spiderman or Batman or anybody like that. You’re going to see Invincible decide how he does things and who he is as a superhero, as he makes mistakes, as he succeeds and fails constantly. I think it’s a little bit more of a realistic take on superheroes because of that. I’m just really excited for you to be able to start this journey and experience this story in a way you haven’t experienced before.”
Two of the show’s stars, Zazie Beetz and Gillian Jacobs were also on hand to chat during the press conference. When talking about the series, Beetz, who voices Amber Bennett, Mark’s high-school girlfriend, talked about how she enjoyed the juxtaposition that INVINCIBLE had to offer:
“I’m into the family drama stuff in the show,” stated Beetz. “I really think it’s interesting to see how Mark (Invincible) and Nolan (Omni Man) have to square their relationship with each other and how that arc is throughout the whole season. I just think it’s a really interesting kind of collision of the super world, but then also the really basic sort of father/son story. It encapsulates to me sort of where their relationship goes, a lot of what it’s about, and the energy of the show.”
Gillian Jacobs, who voices Eve Wilkins/Atom Eve and also attends high-school with Mark, becomes an important ally to him, touched upon what she was excited for fans to experience:
“I also think for people who were fans of the comic to see these big sequences come to life in an animated form will be really exciting,” remarked Jacobs. “I think that because Robert [Kirkman] is so involved in the show that it will feel, hopefully, like the comic that they loved, they just get to see it animated now in motion.”
INVINCIBLE has a lot of surprises in store for fans and enough twists and turns to keep viewers engaged and wanting more. Newcomers to Kirkman’s INVINCIBLE world, have no fear! The series is accessible and easy to follow along. As for fans of the comics, I hope it’s everything you hoped for and more. The first three episodes of the INVINCIBLE premiere will be on Prime Video on March 26 with a subsequent release every Friday.
