For the past two years, most of us have gone on a journey with Sabrina Spellman as she, along with her coven and friends, have battled whatever unfolding horrors await them in Greendale. However, we have now come to the end of their story with the final season of CHILLING ADVENTURES OF SABRINA PART 4 which will be released on Netflix on December 31, 2020.
In the final season of CHILLING ADVENTURES OF SABRINA PART 4, The Eldritch Terrors will descend upon Greendale. The coven must fight each terrifying threat one-by-one (The Weird, The Returned, The Darkness to name a few), all leading up to…the Void, which is the End of All Things (very meta if you think about it). As the witches wage war, with the help of The Fright Club, Nick begins to slowly earn his way back into Sabrina’s heart, but will it be too late?
If you thought Season 3 was weird (which you can read a recap here) then buckle up, cause Season 4 is about to take you on an even crazier, more bizarre journey than you could have ever imagined. Horror fans who are familiar with Weird Fiction and/or the works of H.P. Lovecraft will find a lot to love with this final season. Each episode focuses on an Eldritch Terror allowing for these individual episodes to feel like their own mini-movies.
Horror fans will also rejoice at the influx of gore that this season has. There are hearts being ripped out, decapitated heads that speak, and so much more. Additionally, the practical effects used are stellar, especially when it comes to the look and feel of each Eldritch Terror. Also, if you’re like me, you’ll be excited to see a cameo from actress Pollyanna McIntosh who has had a flourishing career in the horror genre with roles in The Woman, “The Walking Dead”, and more.
When it comes to Sabrina, I was glad that the series tackled themes such as accountability and finding oneself. I think we can all agree that Sabrina (played by Kiernan Shipka) has had quite a few missteps, which have put her and her loved ones in harm’s way on a consistent basis. This season tackles that head-on in a way in which Sabrina can’t ignore, which was a smart move. That said, it’s still important to remember that Sabrina is a 16-year-old and is bound to make mistakes just like any of us would; however, we don’t have the weight of humanity on our shoulders.
This season also focuses a lot of attention on Rosaline (played by Jaz Sinclair), allowing for the character to truly flourish as she comes into her own powers. We also get to see the relationship between Theo (played by Lachlan Watson) and Robin (played by Jonathan Whitesell) grow, though I wish this season had a bit more focus on their characters, especially Theo. Where Rosaline’s character had a fleshed-out arc this season, Theo’s was lacking and I wish we had been given the chance to see his arc come to a close.
All that said, CHILLING ADVENTURES OF SABRINA PART 4 wouldn’t be what it is without the drama infused moments of romance. As Sabrina Spellman navigates singlehood, Theo and Rosaline experience the ups and downs of their relationships with Robin and Harvey (Ross Lynch), respectively. However, if anything is going to put a kink in a relationship, it would definitely be having to try to fight the Eldritch Terrors. This alone puts relationships and friendships to a test in a way we haven’t seen in previous seasons. Even though Sabrina Spellman must come to terms with being alone, that doesn’t mean that love triangles don’t form. If you’re wondering “Will Sabrina end up with Nick?”, I’m here to tell you that you have to watch the series to find out.
The final season of CHILLING ADVENTURES OF SABRINA PART 4 has some fun surprises in store for fans. The Aunties from the original 90’s TV series, “Sabrina the Teenage Witch”, played by Beth Broderick and Caroline Rhea, make an appearance in one of the more bizarre episodes of the seasons. We also get a new set of Weird Sisters, and we learn if two Sabrina’s, Sabrina Spellman and Sabrina Morningstar, really can exist at the same time. Furthermore, there are musical numbers galore including my favorite, a rendition of Rocky Horror Picture Show‘s “Time Warp”.
As I’m sure you can tell, this final season packs quite a lot into its 8 episodes. I do think for Sabrina, her arc comes full circle, leaving the viewer with a semblance of peace with how things play out. The first half of the season is the strongest, with the second half going off the rails a bit. But overall, it’s a fun, weird, eclectic hodgepodge of witchcraft and horror. I would have loved to have seen this series continue, diving deeper into Weird fiction and Lovecraftian lore. But, for the time being, I’m happy with how the series ended. Because in the end, Sabrina finally finds the freedom she’s been looking for.
