[Interview] Kiernan Shipka & Gavin Leatherwood for CHILLING ADVENTURES OF SABRINA

Just in time for the new year, Netflix has graciously gifted us a 4th and final season of the hit show CHILLING ADVENTURES WITH SABRINA. Premiering on December 31, CHILLING ADVENTURES OF SABRINA‘s final eight episodes find The Eldritch Terror descending upon Greendale. The coven must fight each terrifying threat one-by-one (The Weird, The Returned, The Darkness and more), all leading up to…The Void, aka the End of All Things. As the witches wage war, with the help of The Fright Club, Nick begins to slowly earn his way back into Sabrina’s heart, but will it be too late?

Recently, Nightmarish Conjurings’ Shannon McGrew had the chance to attend a round-table interview featuring the cast of the series. In our first interview segment we spoke with Sabrina herself, Kiernan Shipka, as well as Gavin Leatherwood, who plays Sabrina’s tortuous love interest, Nick. During our conversation they talked about everything from Sabrina and Nick’s attraction to one another to what they will miss most about playing their characters.

Why do you think it’s so difficult for Sabrina and Nick to not be in each other’s orbits?

Kiernan Shipka: Kids man, right? It’s like freaking emotional teenagers. I think there is a push and pull in Sabrina and Nick’s relationship that represents maybe a larger theme of the push and pull of the show and Sabrina’s duality and their sort of existence is quite complicated. So I think that the relationship lends itself to just more complications because of their complicated lives.

Gavin Leatherwood: Yeah, for sure, I mean it’s almost as if they’re in this entanglement. Sabrina showed Nick something that he was so unfamiliar to, which was a form of love that he hadn’t seen being exposed to, in the witch world he was mostly lusting after people. Sabrina really showed him a different side and ever since that he hasn’t been able to really see anything else. It’s like he’s in this bullfight with himself where he’s trying to tame his lusting ways and also understand what unconditional love and what loving someone in a different capacity is. I know that’s why Nick can’t really stay away from Sabrina, she’s made this crazy impact on him.

What has been your favorite part about playing these characters?

Kiernan Shipka: Oh man, you get close with characters and you just, they become a part of you and your life. When I talk about Sabrina, I’m not talking about myself, I’m not talking about myself playing her, I’m talking about her. They become friends and confidence and vehicles in which you express your emotions. To let go of that is hard but it’s also beautiful. Having Sabrina as a part of my life, you know, I started the show when I was 18 and I wrapped when I was 20 and those are big years. Those are very formative years where you’re supposed to be like screwing up in college. I was forever grateful that I had Sabrina during like two very big years of my life, personally. She got me through.

Gavin Leatherwood: Yeah, Kiernan kind of said it already but you do grow some sort of love for this character that seemingly exists in your mind. Then it becomes something collaborative and then on screen and then it’s no longer yours and it’s for fans to eat up. I think there’ll be a bit of that sort of relief when part four does come out because it will then be turned over to the fans who deserve this. We’ve worked really hard on all this, you know, the crew and cast and everyone from the tip of the iceberg all the way down. I’m so excited that we have one more part to give over and I cannot wait for people to see it.

Part 4 of CHILLING ADVENTURES OF SABRINA premieres December 31, 2020 on Netflix. If you need a little refresher before the premiere, make sure to check out our Season 3 review here.
