I’m going to be completely straight with you. I don’t know how to say his name without adding some sort of honorific. The Great usually works for me, but I’ve been known to use The Amazing, The Spectacular, The Incomparable and of course, The Underrated. I speak of The One and Only Jeffrey Combs. More about him later.

NEVERMORE: AN EVENING WITH EDGAR ALLAN POE is a one man show written by Dennis Paoli and directed by Stuart Gordon (REANIMATOR) and featuring the works of Edgar Allan Poe. If you’re like me, you were forced to read and dissect Poe in middle school until there was nothing left but dismembered pieces of something that was wholly beautiful. It wasn’t until I was in my early 20’s that I rediscovered Poe and really appreciated his work. I know he is considered the original goth guy. Yes, I’ve seen that South Park episode and I guess that makes sense. The content of his poetry and stories is certainly dark and brooding. I remember reading Annabel Lee and feeling like my heart would explode at the romantic sadness of it and I spent a lot of time thinking about the man who’s pen brought those words to us.

It’s through Dennis Paoli’s story with the direction of Stuart Gordon, that The Great Jeffrey Combs brings Edgar Allan Poe to life. Just close your eyes and imagine for a moment that you could hear The Raven from the lips of the man who actually wrote it. Imagine Poe himself telling you the story of his life. Imagine the incredible heartbreak of Annabel Lee, read to you by the very man who put those words to paper. This is the gift that The Incredible Jeffrey Combs gives us in NEVERMORE: AN EVENING WITH EDGAR ALLAN POE.

I was fortunate enough to see this live at the Sleepy Hollow International Film Festival and, as a New Yorker who has been to many a Broadway show and live performance, I can without hesitation tell you that it was the best live show I’d ever seen, bar none. I almost peed when I found out that it was being released on Audiobook this Halloween season. The year 2020 has been redeemed in my book. Okay, maybe I go too far. But, dear Horror Friend, this audiobook CANNOT be missed. I never understood the humor of The Tell-Tale Heart until I heard The Unbelievable Jeffrey Combs read it to me as Poe. I must reiterate, this cannot be missed.

The audiobook release of NEVERMORE: AN EVENING WITH EDGAR ALLAN POE was recorded live on Halloween night in Boston. I loved hearing the audience reaction to Combs’ performance. You become immersed in the story and part of the community of fans enjoying this inimitable experience. I recommend cozying up with a cup of tea (or you could join Poe himself in a boozy beverage) and sitting and listening to this audiobook in one shot. All Hail The Phenomenal Jeffrey Combs!
