[Comic-Con@Home Panel Recap] WHAT WE DO IN THE SHADOWS

WHAT WE DO IN THE SHADOWS is a brilliant F/X comedy that follows three vampires living together in Staten Island trying to make their way in the human world. With the Season 2 finale having aired on June 10, Comic-Con@Home was the perfect time to bring the all-star cast and crew back together. As a huge fan, I was honored to be able to follow along as they reunited to look back on Season 2.

The panel was made up of Kayvan Novak (Nandor), Matt Berry (Laszlo), Natasia Demetriou (Nadja), Harvey Guillén (Guillermo), Mark Proksch (Colin Robinson), Stefani Robinson (producer/writer) and Paul Simms (executive producer/writer). In addition to the brilliant cast and writers, the panel was led by the best moderator we could have asked for, our favorite zombie familiar, Topher; you may know him as Haley Joel Osment.

Off the bat (pun intended), the group discussed how the relationship between Nandor and Guillermo has changed so drastically over the seasons of WHAT WE DO IN THE SHADOWS. Kayvan compares the bond they have to a dysfunctional family with a touch of codependency. Harvey agreed and added that he was surprised by his character’s story arc but is enjoying the growth of Guillermo. It leaves us all thinking though. Will he follow in the footsteps of his ancestor Van Helsing or will his loyalty to Nandor prove to be stronger?

Next on the agenda, the team discussed some of the more memorable moments from Season 2 of WHAT WE DO IN THE SHADOWS. Natasia commented that the scene with her doll-self were some of the best she had filmed. “It was a dream to work with someone as good as me,” she said. Her fellow peers could not have laughed harder. For the Colin Robinson promotion episode, we discovered that Mark was completely ill the whole time. He said it was miserable being sick in Toronto in the cold and the flying he did in the episode was painful. Mark was always worried that would come across on film but Paul and Stefani assured him the opposite. And probably the most memorable among the geek world was the appearance of Mark Hamill. Hamill came on board to play Jim the Vampire and the crew could not have been happier. Being a huge fan of Hamill, Matt admitted to giggling when the stunt coordinators had arranged a fight scene involving pool cues held like light sabers.

After many laughs and a few tech issues involving Kayvan disappearing, Haley moved on to discuss the filming conditions and set design on WHAT WE DO IN THE SHADOWS. Natasia called out that though filming at night is quite surreal, it was good for the show. We found out that they would not see the sun for days and the scenes filmed outside were freezing. The snow seen in the show is real and adds to the overall atmosphere so all agreed it was worth the cold. Oppositely, the home the trio live in is always lit primarily due to the hundreds of candles spread around at all times. Natasia fessed up to not always paying attention and confirmed that she literally caught herself on fire once. She said she had never seen the crew move so fast to put her out. The cast all agreed that the detail and work put into the house and its many fixtures were “immaculate and always inspiring”. The cast and crew also admitted that they were so taken with many of the artworks and furnishings that they all had souvenirs. It was wonderful to see them leave their camera and come back with a trinket of a past episode.

As the panel was drawing to a close, Haley encouraged writer Paul Simms to share some hints as to what fans could expect for Season 3 of WHAT WE DO IN THE SHADOWS, set to premiere in 2021. Though concerned with giving away to much he shared many of the characters are looking for something. Nandor may be searching for love with the rift now between him and Guillermo. Unknown as to how he became an energy vampire, Colin will seek out some answers. Oh yeah, and the housemates get a dog. Well, a hell-hound to be more precise.

As everyone said goodbye, you could see that they were more than just co-stars. They were a family. And with talented writers, smart direction, and a dedicated cast, we can be sure that Season 3 will be another huge success.
