Today, A24 has released its newest screenplay book, celebrating HEREDITARY, the debut feature film by Midsommar writer-director Ari Aster, available to purchase exclusively at shop.a24films.com.
A collectible object for the home and a primer for aspiring filmmakers, the book features a foreword by Bong Joon Ho, Academy Award-winning director of Parasite (2019), and a new essay by Leslie Jamison, author of The Empathy Exams (2014). Along with the full HEREDITARY screenplay, the book also includes Ari Aster’s detailed breakdown of the film’s harrowing family séance scene, revealing his method of writing thorough shot lists before each film.
This is the fourth screenplay book released by A24’s growing publishing arm, A24 BOOKS, which so far includes Alex Garland’s Ex Machina, Robert Eggers’ The Witch, and Barry Jenkins’ Moonlight. Every book elevates and amplifies each filmmaker’s creative vision, enhanced by original writing courtesy of contemporary voices in film, literature, music, science, and more. Each book includes the unabridged screenplay, full credits, as well as a visual section entitled “24 Frames”—a selection of handpicked, full-color frames with particular significance to the director.
The film synopsis is as follows: When the matriarch of the Graham family passes away, her daughter and grandchildren begin to unravel cryptic and increasingly terrifying secrets about their ancestry, trying to outrun the sinister fate they have inherited.
RogerEbert.com editor Brian Tallerico described HEREDITARY as “A deeply unsettling film, the kind of horror movie that pulls from relatable human emotions like grief and resentment to ultimately become an absolute nightmare,” while Matt Zoller Seitz called the film “creepy beyond belief”. In Shannon McGrew’s review, she says the film is “a multi-layered film that does more than just scare or shock the audience, it makes you think about family dynamics and how far we would go for those that we love.”
