David Arquette shared his thoughts about coming back to the franchise saying, “I am thrilled to be playing Dewey again and to reunite with my SCREAM family, old and new. SCREAM has been such a big part of my life, and for both the fans and myself, I look forward to honoring Wes Craven’s legacy.”

Sheriff Dewey Riley is most known in the franchise for being the protector of the series. In the first film, he tried to save his sister and her friend, Sidney Prescott, from the Ghostface killer. Throughout the course of the franchise, he has found himself rushing to protect Sidney when new murder sprees sprout up around her, with Dewey usually ending up getting into near-death experiences in the process. While we all thought that maybe he could finally take a load off at the end of the fourth installment of the series, it looks like that isn’t going to be the case anymore.

Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett from Radio Silence (Ready or Not) will be directing the film. James Vanderbilt will be penning the screenplay. Kevin Williamson, the screenwriter who originated the SCREAM franchise, will be returning in the executive producer seat for the reboot.

Spyglass Media Group is leading the charge with the project. Public interest surrounding the project surfaced last week when Neve Campbell announced that she was in talks to return as Sidney Prescott, the much-beloved heroine of the franchise. With Campbell potentially returning and Arquette confirmed to return, the reboot won’t be a complete departure for the franchise.

Keeping the original characters will surely provide that transitional note for fans in case Spyglass intends to move forward with the franchise with a mostly new focus of characters. And, with this marking the first film in the franchise not led by the late Wes Craven, the original characters serve as a necessary homage, in my opinion, to the legendary horror director.

Principal photography is aiming to start later on this year in Wilmington, North Carolina, once safety protocols are approved in this COVID-19 era.
