In an exclusive from Deadline, it was revealed today that HBO has greenlit the development of a new series connected to the HELLRAISER horror movie franchise. This series would be the first time the universe has been adapted to a TV series, bringing the Cenobites into the homes of those who dare allow them in.
David Gordon Green has been tapped set to direct the pilot as well as several more episodes that will bring the world of Clive Barker’s The Hellbound Heart to life. Green most recently took on the 2018 Halloween reboot and will be back to handle Halloween Kills and Halloween Ends.
The series will be written by well-known genre veterans Mark Verheiden (“Swamp Thing”, “Hemlock Grove”, “Ash vs Evil Dead”), and Michael Dougherty (Krampus, Godzilla: King of the Monsters, Trick r’ Treat).
Green, Verheiden, and Dougherty will executive produce the series alongside Farah Films’ Dan Farah (Ready Player One, Alter Ego), Vertigo Entertainment’s Roy Lee (The Lego Movie, It Chapter Two), along with Lawrence Kuppin (Hellraiser III: Hell on Earth, Jimmy the Kid) and David Salzman (“MADtv”, “The Rerun Show”) and Panacea Entertainment’s Eric Gardner (Elvira: Mistress of the Dark, “Hoff the Record”)
Danny McBride (“The Righteous Gemstones”, “Vice Principals”), Jody Hill (The Legacy of a Whitetail Deer Hunter, Observe and Report), and Brandon James (Arizona, Hunter Gatherer) will also executive produce. Farah Films exec Andrew Farah and Adam Salzman will also serve as co-exec producers.
This series is unrelated to the film that Spyglass Media Group announced was in the works last year. Over the course of three decades, the HELLRAISER franchise has reached “cult favorite” status with a universe that has spawned ten films, graphic novels, and merchandise. This latest series is the latest adaptation to join the ranks.
