In darkness, everything comes to light. When a grisly murder shocks Los Angeles in 1938, Detective Tiago Vega and his partner Lewis Michener become embroiled in an epic story that reflects the rich history of the city. While the PENNY DREADFUL: CITY OF ANGELS is not connected to the original “Penny Dreadful” series, that gothic vibe is definitely still present in the trailer released today.
For those who are unfamiliar with this particular time period, rising fascism is taking place overseas (as this is the precursor to the second World War). However, fascism is also covertly rising in the States as well. In Los Angeles, specifically, tensions are high for a variety of reasons. There was the Los Angeles flood of 1938, which was one of the largest floods in the history of Los Angeles, Orange, and Riverside counties. Racial tensions are high, especially for migrant workers in the region. Needless to say, it’s a chaotic whirlwind of a time that is ripe for supernatural interpretation.
The series stars Nathan Lane (The Lion King, “The Good Wife”), Natalie Dormer (Picnic at Hanging Rock, “The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance“), Daniel Zovatto, Kerry Bishé (“Halt and Catch Fire”, Rupture), Rory Kinnear (“Penny Dreadful”, Skyfall), Adriana Barraza (Rambo: Last Blood, Dora and the Lost City of Gold), Michael Gladis (“Mad Men”, “Eagleheart”), Jessica Garza (“The Purge”, “SIX”), and Johnathan Nieves (“Grey’s Anatomy”, “Shameless”).
PENNY DREADFUL: CITY OF ANGELS will premiere Sunday, April 26 at 10/9c, on Showtime.
