It’s been fifteen years since Hollywood adapted Ju-On for American audiences and continued the trend of American remakes of East Asian films. The series sparked two sequels, with mixed success. With the return of this particular property, I’d be curious to see whether or not this revitalizes interest in the East Asian horror genre for Westerners or if it’ll go the way of the last Rings addition.
Directed by Nicolas Pesce (The Eyes of My Mother, Piercing), THE GRUDGE stars Andrea Riseborough (Mandy, “Black Mirror”), Demian Bichir (The Nun), John Cho (Searching), Betty Gilpin (“Glow”) with Lin Shaye (Insidious) and Jackie Weaver (Widows). With a screenplay by Nicolas Pesce and a story by Nicolas Pesce and Jeff Buhler, THE GRUDGE is based on the film Ju-On: The Grudge written and directed by Takashi Shimizu. THE GRUDGE is produced by the legendary Sam Raimi (Crawl, Evil Dead) as well as Rob Tapert and Taka Ichise.
THE GRUDGE is rated R by the Motion Picture Association of America for the following reasons: disturbing violence and bloody images, terror and some language. The film will be released in theaters on January 3, 2020, from Screen Gems, a Sony Company.
