Movie Review: ALONG CAME THE DEVIL 2

The sequel to Jason DeVan’s 2018 horror movie Along Came The Devil is here. ALONG CAME THE DEVIL 2, also written and directed by DeVan, picks up immediately where the first installment of the series ends. College-aged Jordan (played by Laura Wiggins) is summoned to her hometown by her aunt who tells her that something is going on with her younger sister—and then stops answering her phone. Once there, Jordan is reunited with her father (played by Mark Ashworth), who made her and her sister’s childhood miserable by being an abusive alcoholic.

Her father claims to have changed; he’s remarried to a woman named Karen (played by Tiffany Fallon), has a young son (played by Cassius DeVan), and has rekindled his Christianity and relationship with God, and wants to repair his relationship with the daughter that miraculously survived his abuse.

Sidebar: I don’t know who needs to hear this, but you are in no way, shape, or form obligated to forgive your abuser. Even (especially) if they are your parent.

Unfortunately, the Christian God cannot stop the Devil from infiltrating their home. Satanic forces begin to torment the already-fractured family and wreak havoc. You know, as Satanic forces are wont to do. It’s now up to Jordan to save herself and her brother, while trying to find out the truth behind the disappearances of her aunt and sister.

ALONG CAME THE DEVIL 2 is of the same caliber as its predecessor. Laura Wiggins gave a fantastic performance and played the role of Jordan with honesty and vulnerability; her performance was one of the only enjoyable parts of the film. The other good parts were some well-timed jumpscares.

While the action ramps up to an engaging speed toward the end, the first hour of ALONG CAME THE DEVIL 2 lags in both pacing and story. If the entire film had as much energy as the climax did, and 86’d a few unnecessary scenes, it would have been a much stronger film.

ALONG CAME THE DEVIL 2 will be released October 11, if you are so inclined to see it. If you liked the first one, you’ll probably enjoy the sequel. If not, then…to the Devil with you.
