TV Review: Season 2 Premiere of LIGHT AS A FEATHER

LIGHT AS A FEATHER is a Hulu and AwesomenessTV original, based on the book of the same name by Zoe Aarsen. This quick-service supernatural thriller is broken into bite-sized 25ish minute episodes, and that is one of the reasons I love it! It’s easy to fit in to your day, so no excuses not to check it out. LIGHT AS A FEATHER has more depth and better acting than your typical ‘teen horror flicks.’ It’s scary, eerie and suspenseful in a way that is still accessible to tween/teen audiences (and I can vouch that it’s still good for adults too!). It also boasts a seriously awesome soundtrack (kudos to music supervisor Lindsay Wolfington).

The show centers around McKenna Brady (played by Liana Liberato), a quiet but popular high school senior. McKenna and her best girlfriends (Brianne Tju as Alex, Ajiona Alexus as Candace & Peyton List as Olivia) accidentally befriend new girl Violet Simmons (Haley Ramm) by way of Halloween-prank-gone-wrong, and invite her to join them for their annual Halloween tradition. When the girls are looking for a new creepy game to play together in their cemetery hangout, Violet suggests ‘Light As A Board, Stiff As A Feather.’ But this has a different spin on it – each player is told the story of how they will die. When the girls start dying off in the exact way that was predicted, the survivors must figure out why they’re being targeted, and how to stop it.

Last night, I got to attend the premiere party at Hyde Sunset and preview the first 2 episodes of LIGHT AS A FEATHER’s upcoming second season so, WARNING: Season 1& 2 spoilers ahead!

The season 1 finale left us with the cliffhanger of McKenna’s realization that she was now the unfortunate one carrying the curse of the deadly game. The show’s villainess, Violet, had finally been freed of it, but their plan to end it forever had been disrupted. For season 2, the circumstances are reversed and viewers get a glimpse of the fear, pain and confusion Violet suffered with throughout the entire previous season, now through the eyes of McKenna. McKenna is desperate to save herself and protect her loved ones. With strained relationships with her family, friends and boyfriend taking a toll on her, and no other clear options in sight, McKenna seeks out the one person she knows may have some answers. The person who put her in this situation in the first place, the person she blames for the death of two of her best friends – Violet Simmons.

Season 2 of LIGHT AS A FEATHER is already improving upon what I thought was a great debut season. Robyn Lively (the original Teen Witch!) takes over the role of Deb Brady, McKenna’s mother. The show looks, and is, higher budget and more cinematic. The first two episodes also seem to have set the bar higher for the visual effects in the show. I can’t wait to binge the rest of these episodes. Can Violet be trusted? My gut says no, but we’ll find out soon enough!

The first 8 episodes of LIGHT AS A FEATHER’s 16 episodes second season drop tomorrow, July 26th on Hulu.
