CAPTAIN MARVEL opens in theaters in just one week and to say that anticipation is high is a complete and total understatement. Earlier last week a press conference was hosted that discussed all non-spoiler related things concerning the upcoming film. Marvel President Kevin Feige was joined by Brie Larson, Jude Law, Lashana Lynch, Samuel L. Jackson, Clark Gregg, Gemma Chan, and directors Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck.

With early reactions to CAPTAIN MARVEL being so positive, we had to dive in to see what cool things were happening in this film to bring such joy to audiences. Needless to say, we learned some pretty interesting things:

The bond between Maria and Carol may be the heart of the film.

Now, this is purely subjective from my perspective, but the bond and love between Maria Rambeau (played by Lashana Lynch) and Carol Danvers (played by Brie Larson) serve as a powerful force within the realm of the CAPTAIN MARVEL film. Larson explained further at the press junket how this love was forged and how it comes to represent something more as the film progresses:

“I think what they’ve gone through together, going through military training together, being the only women. And then using each other to lean on each other through that type of support, and a recognition of their experience is really special. Of course, I think they would have been friends outside of that experience. But, I think that that’s a really tight-knit bond that they have, and their family.

“I mean, that’s kind of what we’re talking about. And I still, without being too showboating about it, it’s just the love of the movie. This is the great love. This is the love lost. This is the love found again. This is the reason to continue fighting, and to go to the ends of the Earth for the person, the thing that you love. And it’s her best friend, and her best friend’s daughter, which to me, is so natural. I don’t think there’s at any point, even, I went and saw the movie with some people. And it was like an hour later where they’re like ‘Oh, Maria’s the love’… So, it’s not like something that we made a big deal about, but it just feels so natural, because that love is so strong.”

That healthy friendship and that strength held between the two, especially as Danvers navigates the chaos that her life eventually becomes during the film, helps keep CAPTAIN MARVEL grounded and real for audiences.

Nick Fury is not the man audiences have come to know over the years.

Since CAPTAIN MARVEL takes place in the ’90s, many of us have been curious as to how the team was going to tackle bringing a younger Nick Fury (played by Samuel L. Jackson) to life onscreen. This moment in the MCU timeline would be when Nick Fury would have been starting out at S.H.I.E.L.D, so the possibilities for his character development would be endless. Samuel L. Jackson didn’t hesitate to address how this Nick Fury would be different for people:

“[You’ll see] a kind of gentler, not so simple, world-weary chip on the shoulder Nick Fury who hasn’t met anyone from another universe just yet. And sort of looking at the crazy lady, trying to figure out why she thinks she’s an alien, and what all it means. And it’s kind of fun to not be the all-knowing, angry persuader that Nick Fury always is. And even more refreshing to have two eyes, so I don’t have to cover one eye while I’m learning my lines.” 

And, with the help of greatly improved technology, audiences would be getting to see a de-aged version of Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury in this upcoming installment.

Working with live cats was very much a learning experience for all involved.

As more and more movie productions start digitizing the animals we see onscreen, more people are not as used to dealing with working with animals on set. When it came to the four cats used to play the audience-favorite feline, Goose, adjustments had to be made by cast members in order to ensure the success of Goose coming to life onscreen. Samuel L. Jackson admitted that he was not particularly an animal person, but he explained what working with the cats, more specifically Reggie, was like:

“Reggie is like most animals that people bring to set that have been trained to do this, that, or the other, he’s snack-oriented. Give him something to eat, he shows up. You know, you give him something to eat. You toss something nice to him, give him something to eat again, they love you. It works out. And that was actually four cats. But Reggie did the majority. You know, he did the heavy lifting most of the time. It was great to be around. She [Larson] had more problems with him than I did. She has cat allergies.” 

Larson confirmed this information and even admitted that she had gotten in trouble for disturbing Reggie’s concentration in a scene when she had announced her trip to Shake Shack. If anyone knows anything about cats, you do not disturb them when they are in deep concentration ever!

CAPTAIN MARVEL flies its way into theaters nationwide on March 8, 2019. Are you ready to go higher, further, and faster? We are.
