As I took my seat and settled in to watch THE PRODIGY, my first thought was “another child possession movie…probably completely predictable”, and you guys, I could not have been more wrong!
THE PRODIGY stars Golden Globe and Emmy nominee Taylor Schilling as Sarah; and Jackson Robert Scott as Miles. I really liked Taylor in Orange Is The New Black, so I figured no matter what I would enjoy this film, but it surpassed all my expectations. The plot centers around Miles, whose disturbing behavior makes his parents think that he’s possessed by some sort of demonic or supernatural being, forcing them to investigate what could be wrong.
Jeff Buhler wrote a wonderful script with enough twists and turns to keep you guessing and on the edge of your seat the entire movie. As soon as I thought I had it figured out, and guessed what was going to happen next, I was proven wrong.
Jackson Robert Scott does a great job as Miles, and as with most child possession movies, you don’t know whether you should be afraid of him or feel bad for him. And the scenes where you catch a glimpse of what really is going on inside him are jump-worthy and incredibly disturbing.
Overall I thought this was a fun movie, brilliantly written, and different enough to keep your attention till the (very surprising) end!
THE PRODIGY arrives in theaters nationwide February 8, 2019.
