2018 is proving to be another fantastic year for fans of the Wizarding World as we not only got another Fantastic Beasts film, but Universal Studios Hollywood once again brought back their Christmas in the Wizarding World of Harry Potter. Similar in vein to last year’s experience, this year offered an array of holiday treats ranging from a spectacular light projection show on the Hogwart’s castle to the newest addition of nightly snowfall.
Having experienced their summer show, The Nighttime Lights at Hogwart’s Castle, I had a bit of an idea of what to expect during their The Magic of Christmas at Hogwart’s Castle light show. With that said, it didn’t take away from how incredibly breathtaking the show was. Clocking in at just around 10 min, the show featured an array of projections upon the castle centered around the themes of holiday cheer. One of my favorite moments was watching the light show transform Hogwarts into an ice castle as well as, what I assume to be, Zonko’s Joke Shop. As the light show began to come to an end, fireworks erupted in the sky which illuminated the castle which was decked out in a projection of Christmas trees and other holiday decor.
After the light show ended, we made our way to the heart of Hogsmeade Village to take in the generated snowfall. This, like the light show, only takes place during designated times, and though the snowfall is brief, its still quite lovely to look at. Living most of my life on the East Coast, I’ve dealt my fair share of snowfall, and though I’m in no rush to experience that again, I did appreciate the brief flurries and the nostalgia that it gave me of home.
In addition to the light show and snow, guests also had the chance to partake in other holiday offerings such as exploring the uniquely themed decor that is individualized for each store front and the a capella Frog Choir which includes Hogwarts students and their giant frogs harmonizing holiday themed songs. There’s also an array of speciality items to purchase such as Christmas ornaments created especially for The Wizarding World of Harry Potter, collectibles which include snow globes featuring Hogwart’s castle, crest and mascot ornaments representing each of the house (go team Slytherin!!), tree toppers, and more! Then there is of course the delicious holiday themed fare and hot Butterbeer that is A MUST HAVE.
Though there isn’t a lot of creepiness to this event, it’s still one that I would absolutely suggest that everyone check out. As a hardcore Slytherin, I will admit that the event even made me happy for the approaching holiday season. If you are a Harry Potter fanatic this is one show that will leave a smile on your face while making you want to twirl in the falling snow between drinking all the Butterbeer. The Magic of Christmas at Hogwart’s Castle will be taking place from now until January 6, 2019 and more information can be found at www.universalstudioshollywood.com.
