Nightmarish Detour Blu-ray/DVD Review: JUSTICE LEAGUE

Let me preface this review by saying that I am not a big comic book fan like most of those that watch these films. I think it’s important to know that I’m not approaching this review knowing the delicate intricacies of these characters; rather I watched the film as an avid fan of movies and a constant filmmaker. I suppose that, in itself, gives me a critical eye when watching films. In truth though, I love the superhero movies that have been released in the last five years or so. Taking into consideration that these are superhero movies, they seem to be consistently made bigger and bigger which I suppose there in lies the fun in movies such as these.

I find that JUSTICE LEAGUE is no different. It did a take a bit to build up the story in the beginning as we needed time to be introduced to all our heroes. These six heroes consist of Batman, Wonder Woman, Aquaman, The Flash, Cyborg, and Superman. Truthfully, our friend Superman has a smaller role in this film as it leaves off where he perished in the previous film (Batman vs. Superman). The film opens up with the world dealing with the loss of a hero; a man who represents hope for the people. Wonder Woman and Batman are left to deal with the evils of the world, that is until the ultimate evil, Steppenwolf, returns and they are left to assemble an army of super beings to battle him. One great aspect about the film is the amazing fight sequence between Steppenwolf and the Amazonian Women from Wonder Woman. I think that’s the first time I’ve seen an epic battle with such fierce females. It was also great to see a fun underwater battle as well with the Atlantians and Aquaman.

When it comes to the superheroes, it was definitely great to see Henry Cavill as Superman, especially with his shirt off. Though I am not a huge fan of Ben Affleck as Batman, there were moments in this film when he made Batman seem rather vulnerable and I liked that. Being as he is the only superhero who isn’t “super”, so to speak, it’s good to see his character battle with that. Then of course there is Jason Momoa as Aquaman, who was definitely hot, but I’m not exactly sure how having a man who talks to fish is helpful on land; however, he does have a pitchfork, which comes in handy. My favorite character next to Wonder Woman (who is a true bad ass) was The Flash. Ezra Miller was both charming and endearing and a joy to watch throughout the film.

Overall this film is a lot of fun. There is a lot going on in these two hours and it’s definitely clear they are setting up for another sequel. It’s hard to have six characters and create a good story with an arc, but since Joss Whedon was one of the writers, I was very happy with the story nonetheless. JUSTICE LEAGUE is a fun film, so grab a glass of wine, put your feet up, and watch the Justice League save the world!
