I’m sure I’ve mentioned this before, but horror shorts have a special place in my heart. If executed properly they can be something truly magical. That’s why I was super stoked to have the opportunity to review the horror short STEVE’S KINKOES for the Slamdance Film Festival.

STEVE’S KINKOES is directed by Emma Debany and stars Timmy Gibson, Charles Bartels, and John Archer Lundgren. The story centers around a man who is copying posters for his missing cat (who also is dead) at a creepy and otherworldly 24/7 photocopy shop called Steve’s Kinkoes. With each passing minute, he becomes more at home in the shop. What will happen to him if he stays forever?

This short has a runtime of less than 7 minutes yet was able to make me cringe with the first opening scene. I didn’t expect that so kudos for grossing me out. It continues to have a creepy sci-fi vibe throughout the story that makes the viewer feel uneasy and anxious to see what will happen next.

The best thing about the short was the creativity and mystery of it all. I can’t say I’ve seen anything like it before, which is a plus – originality always wins with me. It also had an early 90’s vibe to it. The FX were exceptional and made STEVE’S KINKOES stand out.

Overall, short horror stories like this are exactly what made me fall in love with horror shorts in the first place. I think it takes pure talent to create something only a few minutes long yet executes a memorable and horrifying story that stands against full-length features. If you are attending Slamdance, make sure to check out STEVE’S KINKOES when it has it’s premiere on Saturday, January 20th at 9pm.
