This has been a hell of a year for films, especially those within the horror genre, and having had the chance to see so many great one I’ve decided to put together a list of my top 5 favorite horror/thriller’s of 2017!
#5 – UNDERWORLD: BLOOD WARS
Some would argue that the Underworld films are more action than horror but it’s got vampires and werewolves so that’s close enough for me! (We are going to ignore the Twilight saga in this and every single case). You know what else this film has? It has the character of Semira who is so evil, brutal and badass that she makes Bellatrix Lestrange from Harry Potter look like a girl scout.
#4 – THE BABYSITTER
What do you do when you find out that your babysitter is the leader of a satanic cult and is having a sacrificial ritual in your living room after you go to bed? This feels like an 80’s throwback film made in the 90’s! It’s double nostalgic! And a great soundtrack evens out a very fun experience.
#3 – COLOSSAL
An excellent twist on the tired plot of a woman returning home from the big city to her small town and falling for the guy that got away. What’s the twist? How about a real battle with alcohol addiction mixed with a “real” battle with giant (i.e.: colossal) godzilla like creatures!
#2 – GET OUT
This was a perfect tribute to 70’s classics like The Stepford Wivesand Rosemary’s Baby while tackling very current and relevant subject matter. GET OUT doesn’t vaguely suggest it’s message, it smacks you right in the face and permanently knocks you into the Sunken Place!
#1 – CREEP 2
Even though I’m burned out on found footage as a horror genre, anything the Duplass brothers are involved in I am instantly drawn in and CREEP 2 is no exception. The calm yet psychotic characters feel so real you’ll have a hard time believing that it’s not!
