Movie Review: COLD MOON (2017)

I love a spooky ghost story, especially ones that revolve around a juicy revenge. Those ones send chills down your spine and have you questioning if you have any spirits chasing after you. Some do it successfully while others fall flat and are often rather boring. I recently watched COLD MOON. Did it deliver a thrilling and spooky story perfect for October?

COLD MOON is directed and written by Griff Furst based on the novel by Michael McDowell. The film stars Tommy Wiseau, Christopher Lloyd, Josh Stewart, Frank Whaley, Robbie Kay, Candy Clark, Chester Rushing, and more. COLD MOON is a chilling tale about supernatural vengeance centering around Nathan Redfield. Nathan is known for his dashing good looks and charm, but most of all his daddy’s money and power. When a ghost begins to haunt him, he slowly begins to lose his mind and drinks heavier than ever before. When people start to notice his odd behavior, Nathan panics even more. Why is this spirit haunting him and what is he hiding?

I realize that with a powerhouse cast and big budget, audiences’ expectations will be high. However, I enjoyed COLD MOON quite a bit. It had its flaws but it delivered a thrilling mystery that kept me entertained throughout most of the film. It was fun putting all the pieces together and discovering the truth behind the vengeance. As far as the story goes, my only complaint is that I’ve seen this type of revenge before but at least it was executed beautifully.

As previously mentioned the cast is phenomenal. There were a few characters that were over the top, but for the most part the main actors delivered chilling performances. Josh Stewart, known for his roles in The Collection, The Dark Knight Rises, Interstellar, and “Criminal Minds”, is always a delight to watch on screen. I really loved his role, I got to see a different side of him. He was disturbed, cocky, and a complete mess. Robbie Kay’s character stood out as well and he delivered a solid supporting role. He’s a talented young actor and I look forward to seeing him in more projects. Then there is Christopher freaking Lloyd. Need I say more?

I will admit that the special effects and makeup were a bit cheesy. I watch a lot of indie films that have tiny budgets yet don’t slack in this area so it’s a little disappointing to see that with a bigger budget film. It didn’t take away from the film, but it made certain scenes less spooky and more comical.

Overall, COLD MOON has its flaws but it’s still worth a watch for the cast alone. It has a creepy atmosphere that’s perfect for this time of year and I would recommend watching it in-between your 31 Nights of Halloween marathon. Let us know what you think when you do. Enjoy!

COLD MOON is now in select theaters and available on VOD
