Two weekends ago, I had the chance to cover the blue carpet for the World Premiere of SYFY’s SHARKNADO 5: GLOBAL SWARMING at The Linq Hotel in Las Vegas. In attendance was a range of celebrities and reality TV stars that ranged from Ian Ziering, Tara Reid, Hal Sparks, Bai Ling, director Anthony C. Ferrante, a cardboard cut-out of Brett Michaels, Olympic Diver Greg Louganis, Kendra Wilkinson, and more.
You should probably know that I’ve been a fan of SYFY’s absurd films for years, my favorite being SHARKTOPUS. With that said, I do have a very soft spot in my heart for the SHARKNADOfilms, so it was truly an honor to be able to cover such a fun event. The fans, in which there was no shortage of, came out in droves, hoping to get a peek at favorites such as Ian Ziering and Tara Reid. Fans also had the chance to purchase tickets for the event in which they would be able to watch the premiere of SHARKNADO 5 surrounded by the cast of the film.
In regards to the movie, what can I really say? It’s a SHARKNADO movie through and through. Fin (Ziering), once again, with the help of his bionic wife April (Reid), help to save the world from tornadoes filled with sharks. This time though, they have to travel from Europe to America to the Middle East, and everywhere in between, to find the missing pieces needed to stop the sharknados from destroying the world – and to find their son, who has been swept up in one of the tornadoes. Along the way, we get to see a handful of humorous cameos that included Fabio as The Pope, Charo as The Queen of England, Chris Kattan as the Prime Minister and much, much more.
Having the chance to watch this film with a live audience was definitely a unique experience. Tara Reid, for one, loved when her one-liners were spoken, and seemed genuinely amused with all that was going on. The audience as a whole was very enthusiastic and it was clear that they were incredibly entertained with the film. There was even a death scene that elicited shock and dismay from the crowd of viewers, which I found to be touching, especially considering how many people die by sharknados.
SHARKNADO 5: GLOBAL SWARMING ended with a cliffhanger, because really, why wouldn’t it? As long as people keep watching these films, they are going to keep being made and honestly, I don’t see a problem with that. There are still so many lingering questions that need to be answered – what is April’s fate? Is Dolph Lundgren really Fin’s son? Where exactly is Fin? I for one look forward to seeing how the story plays out in any of the subsequent films to come. SHARKNADO 5: GLOBAL SWARMING may not be winning any awards any time soon, but it’ll take your mind off all the actual turmoil going on in the world, and for that I’m genuinely grateful.
