What if you could instantly share the mind and skills of Stephen Hawking, Beyone, or Lebron James? In anticipation of the release of the sci-fi thriller, MINDGAMERS, Shannon spoke with director Andrew Goth (B.U.S.T.E.D.) about his latest film and his views on the rapid advancement of technology.

Nightmarish Conjurings: Hi Andrew, thanks so much for speaking with us today! For those who may not be familiar with your film MINDGAMERS, can you tell us a little bit about the film and what inspired you to make it?

Andrew Goth: The movie looks at a world where mind-to-mind connective technology exists, allowing everyone to transfer motor-skills. A kind of human shareware. It raises the prospect of a coming collective consciousness. The inspiration came from a lot of existing tech that is already seeking to find a way to connect human minds. You’ll be amazed at what is achievable right now.

NC: What was the casting process like and did you have any of the actors in mind when creating the roles?

AG: One of the best experiences of the film was that we could begin by open casting, so we threw the net really wide to find new talent. Seeing the chemistry come together and the characters evolve as the actors took on their parts was great. I think it speaks volumes that the cast are still good friends, it was a unifying journey for everyone. Sam Neill was the only actor that I really wanted to pursue for Kreutz. I was more than lucky to get him.

NC: Your film deals with a scientific breakthrough that could be used for a more sinister purpose. Do you think this concept is something that could become a real threat in the new future?

AG: Technology always has the potential to be used for good or evil. The concept of mind to mind connective tech is of course fraught with both ethical and physical danger, but personally I see its potential. I think humanity is destined to connect. I say that and yet I like to be alone, so don’t listen to me.

NC: What were some of the challenges you faced during filming?

AG: As with every indie film, it was a tight shoot with a lot of locations. Added to this, the physical demands on our cast were huge, with so many action sequences. But everyone pulled together and the sense of teamwork was strong.

NC: What is it about the thriller genre that interests you as a director?

AG: I would say this is more mind bender. It is exciting to play with audience expectation. You take them down one narrative path and just as they think that they know what’s coming, you swerve down another slope. But it must be enjoyable. And not taken too seriously. There is a lot of real science talk about this movie but I want it to be a fun ride.

NC: Last, but certainly not least, what can your fans expect from you in the future?

AG: I’m working on a film that takes place in the real world. No supernatural entities or sci-fi, but it is inspired by true events that defy belief. I also have my eye on a comic book character that has not yet hit the big screen. Wish me luck!
