Movie Review: LEPRECHAUN 2 (1994)

Salutations my screechers, screamers, and scary dreamers,

Tonight’s tale of terror entitled “Leprechaun 2” concerns a cunning little leprechaun following a female and forcing her to become his bride.

Those who are looking for a scare should be made aware that much like the preceding one, this entry’s focus is on twisted fun.  While there are less scares to be had it is hard to walk away mad as the Leprechaun’s violent spree is full of such anarchic glee.  The best part of his high jinks is the moment where he drinks and as he begins to lose his wits his powers go on the fritz.

As always our antagonist is a joy to watch, but the rest of the acting is far from top notch and a few of the players are sure to evince an uncomfortable wince.  While the acting is mostly second rate it was not bad enough to earn my hate because peppered throughout were a glimmers of light whose performances were airtight.  On the bright side we have the character of Morty who proves just as interesting as our famous shorty who is perfectly portrayed as just a bit sleazy without ever making his performance feel cheesy.

The campy atmosphere is again met with great effects far above what one usually expects from B horror movie fare which makes this outing all the more rare.  It helps that for the most part everything is practically done, which often ages better in the long run, so it has a natural feel that only further adds to its appeal. The makeup effects are also quite charming as they make the Leprechaun look quite alarming and are effectively used in one character’s demise as we watch his face melt before our eyes.

Story/Concept: 1
Direction/Style: 1
Scares: 1
Atmosphere: 1
Rewatchability: 2
TOTAL: 6/10

In conclusion, this could have been a catastrophe, but thanks to its high energy this proves to be quite fun even though the concept has already been done.

Stick to the shadows my fine friends.
