Hi again, my ghosts and ghouls!

While working my retail job this week, my friend and I had discussion that absolutely blew me away. Mop in hand, I leaned against the wall with a look of bewilderment on my face (I wish I could have captured it for you all). He had asked “what was the last movie you saw that was really, truly different?”

It took a cool four minutes for me to actually come up with a response…but when I did, what came to mind was the 2015 film We Are Still here, written and directed by Ted Geoghegan.

The past few years have been rough for horror; most of the ideas we’ve seen have been monotonous, badly written, and have had acting that’s worse. Luckily, We Are Still here combats all of those points, and delivers a tense, clever story that’s fun, but still packs a punch.

When the Sacchetti family loses their son in a tragic car accident, they decide to move to New England to get away, recoup and heal. Little does the family know, there’s some history that comes with the new house- the Dagmar family that previously lived there was the source of plenty of controversy during the time that they used the house a funeral home.

The locals seem to know a thing or two about that history, as well…perhaps a little too much?

The Sacchetti’s learn real quick that sometimes its better to listen to your neighbor telling you to get out ASAP than to stick around and see what happens.

Like I said, this film finally delivers something other than the cliche “entity in the house” storyline. It’s a breath of fresh air amongst horror films with good ideas that fall flat because of bad writing.
