Movie Review: COCKNEYS VS. ZOMBIES (2012)

Salutations my screechers, screamers, and scary dreamers,

Tonight’s tale of terror entitled “Cockneys vs. Zombies” relates robbers and retirees wrangling the recently reanimated.

Let us address this right from the top, so that the comparisons to “Shaun of the Dead” can stop, those who take a longer point of view know that zombie comedies are nothing new.  They started in the forties with films like “Zombies on Broadway” and they have now become a cinematic mainstay.  I will grant that this has a similar setting and tone, but it is very capable of standing on its own.

The story is hardly state of the art but it does receive quite a jump start by having half of the cast be retirees defending their old folk’s home from the zombies.  These characters were such a delight that I would have been perfectly alright with a movie focused solely on their actions instead of breaking it up into factions.  Bank robbers round out the rest of the troupe and while they are the weaker group they were still able to bring a smile to my face even though their story was more commonplace.

Creative termination quickly becomes the centerpiece from shish kabob zombies to a jaw that will not release and through it all the special effects keep pace as bullets and guts flew all over the place.  Although I liked the beginning and end songs more, the carnage is well accompanied by a retro sounding score.  The opening song quickly makes it known that this picture is aiming for a much lighter tone and since the manic action rarely gives pause the effects only help to further the cause.

Story/Concept: 1
Direction/Style: 2
Scares: 0
Atmosphere: 1
Rewatchability: 2

TOTAL: 6/10

In brief, this film may not challenge one’s brains but I can attest that it certainly entertains.  The characters are tough be they young or old, but I wish the retirees had spent more time in the fold.

Stick to the shadows my fine friends.
