Movie Review: THE AWAKENING (2011)

Salutations my screechers, screamers, and scary dreamers,

Tonight’s tale of terror entitled “The Awakening” sees suspicious supernatural scam foiler Florence commissioned to confirm claims of apparitions appearing amidst an academy and assassinating an adolescent.  Secretive staff, prankish pupils, and a giggling ghost flout Florence’s scientific systems.

This picture functions as a classic ghost story so it is rich with mood and not the least bit gory.  The score plays a vital part in drawing us in from the very start and from there it never misses a beat but keeps one on the edge of their seat.  The ambiance is strengthened by the school whose muted colors feel austere and cruel.

Some people may be turned off by this creepy slow burn but I found myself drawn in by Miss. Hall’s excellent turn.  It is important in a film like this to have a lead of such precision since we are not spoon fed the answers through forced exposition.  The supporting cast all help shoulder the load and are very convincing as the mystery starts to unfold.

The creepiness revolves around getting inside one’s head with bumps and creaks designed to elicit dread.  The dollhouse is a great example of the well-constructed tableaus that are certain to keep most viewers on their toes.  A movie like this thrives on a slower pace by creating a sense of uneasiness rather than scares that are in your face.

In summation, there is a lot for viewers to take in here from the superb character moments to the dense atmosphere.  This movie definitely will not fail those looking for a vintage supernatural tale.

Stick to the shadows my fine friends.
