Ripped from the pages of the Frank L. Baum's "Land of Oz" novels, The Speakeasy Society's newest piece throws audiences into the middle of an alternate reality game (ARG) that takes place in real time and evolves according to audiences' responses.
CHAPTER 1 - THE KEY
After Dorothy left, the Scarecrow took charge of the wonderful land of Oz and things have gone awry. Oz and it's citizens are in distress. There is civil unrests. There is violence in the streets. And you are being recruited to serve in the Scarecrow's Armed Militia. But there is deception around every corner and things aren't quite what they seem.
Kansas, you have a choice. The Mid-West is in the midst of the dust bowl. You are in need of food, money, and shelter. Opportunity is scarce, hope is nowhere to be seen, and the future looks bleak. When a curious group of strangers set up a colorful tent on the edge of town - you have a decision to make - one that could unlock a 'world of new possibilities.' All they ask is a brief moment of your time...There's a storm on the horizon. What side will you be on?
CREATION OF THE PIECE
Director Julianne Just dived into the ARG experience and expansive story of OZ. "Many people are familiar with the 'Wizard of Oz' story because of the movie but haven't read the many, many other books Baum wrote. We are using those story lines to see what if 'clicking your heels three times' was only the start of an epic power struggle. The participants for The Key get to determine the story they experience. The choices they make will determine what path they are given - and even the simple choices - a yes or no question can spiral audience members off on a completely different story line."
The Key was first workshopped as a selection at IndieCade 2016's Night Games event on Oct. 15th.
There will be no late admittance. The on-site running time is estimated to be about 15-20 minutes, but performance lengths may vary depending on audience choices.
Please note - the performance requires audience mobility. It is intended for audiences of 14 years of age and older.
