For the Blu-ray release of the new terrifying chapter in the RING franchise, RINGS, Shannon had the chance to speak with actors Matilda Anna Ingrid Lutz and Alex Roe about their characters and what it was like working with one of the creepiest horror icons in recent years.
Nightmarish Conjurings: Hi Matilda and Alex! Thanks so much for speaking with us today about RINGS. For those who may not be familiar with your latest roles, can you tell us a little bit about them?
Matilda Anna Ingrid Lutz: I play Julia who is a strong and determined woman who's willing to do anything for love especially when she finds out what has happened to her boyfriend.
Alex Roe: I play Holt who is a guy that gets swept up into some bad stuff at college and luckily has a girlfriend who is willing to risk her life for his own.
NC: What type of research did you both do to get into the headspace for your roles? Did you watch the previous films prior?
AR: I watched the previous films and the original RINGU to get into what the franchise was about. Matilda and I also spent a lot of time together - we had about two weeks together before shooting and it was nice to be able to jump into these characters and get to know each other.
ML: I watched THE RING when I was a kid but I was covering my eyes the whole time. I remember watching it a second time, after my audition, and calling my brother to come and watch it with me because I couldn't do it by myself (laughs).
NC: What was it like when you both saw Samara on set for the first time and how was it interacting with her?
ML: I think the first time I met Samara (played by Bonnie Morgan) was in the makeup trailer and she had her leg flipped over her shoulder. Bonnie is scary because she stays in character so it was definitely fun.
AR: Bonnie played pranks on us all the time, she's mischievous. You'll be eating lunch and she'll put her hand on your shoulder when she has all her makeup on or she'll just sort of stand right behind you and as you turn around she's just there with her hair over her face. She's a sadist.
NC: Did anything scary happen on the set that helped set the mood?
ML: Whenever someone was in makeup, the guys that are responsible for the makeup are incredible. I think it took 5 hours to put on Bonnie's makeup and several hours to take it off. One time the guys did makeup on Alex and I forgot and I got in the mini-van to go to set and I was freaking out when I saw him.
NC: Last but certainly not least, what can fans of yours expect from you in the future?
ML: I shot a comedy called THE DIVORCE PARTY as well as a French thriller in Morocco called REVENGE where I play a really bad, badass.
AR: I'm in a series that will be starting in the summer of 2018 called "Siren" as well as a movie called HOT SUMMER NIGHTS, which I'm really proud of, that just premiered at SXSW. That should come out at the end of the year or early next year. I also have a movie called FOREVER MY GIRL which comes out in September.
RINGS is now available to own on Blu-ray Combo Pack and Digital HD.
