Cons are fun. There’s no other way about it, from the energy in the air to the cosplayers to the metric buttload of merchandise that you absolutely must have, there’s just something about going to a con that makes you feel like you’re on vacation. Or some kind of nerdy/geeky heaven.

Fresh on the con circuit is WhedonCon, a convention devoted entirely to (you guessed it) the works of Joss Whedon, with an emphasis on his original creations. From “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” to “Firefly” and “Serenity”, the convention is a celebration of his unique creations and while it is but a postage stamp of a convention you still manage to see just about every walk of life walking the aisles of the “Sunnydale Mall”.

This is only the second year for the convention, and this year it was hosted at the Marriott in Woodland Hills, CA. The convention was divided into two distinct areas: the Sunnydale Mall and an upstairs area which consisted of “Autograph Alley” and photography studio. There was also a small theater, and a couple panel rooms. We knew that this was going to be a small convention, but I had no idea just how small it was going to be. We arrived at an hour after the doors were opened on Friday afternoon, and after 45 minutes had seen all that the convention had to offer. This is not to say that WhedonCon was a bust either, there was something very charming about the experience, and it is quite obvious that once this convention finds it’s legs that it will be an event to contend with in the future. I only hope that there will be a touch more horror to sink our fangs into, and maybe a few cosplayers.

As massive Buffy/Whedon fans, we were hoping that it was going going to be a bit larger but ultimately, it was a lot of fun. Whether it was perusing “Buffy” themed over-mitts and Funkos, or bumping into Nicholas Brendon in the Starbucks, it was a fun afternoon spent in the Whedon fandom, and we’ll most likely be back again next year!
