Inspired by real-life and made to look nothing like it, Michael Reich’s semi-autobiographical experimental dramedy SHE’S ALLERGIC TO CATS is so much more than just another indie film about a dude trying to make a movie (we swear). Shot in 4K on Red Cameras and run through DVD players, MiniDV, and VHS tapes, Reich’s first feature is a work of low-fi technical prowess and absurd creative brilliance. Equal parts underdog story and psychedelic video-art collage, not to mention unexpectedly musical, SHE’S ALLERGIC TO CATS has something for everyone

Michael Pinkney (Mike Pinkney, longtime creative collaborator to Reich) is a dog groomer living in a rat-infested Hollywood apartment that spends his nights honing his ‘weird video art’ skills and dreams of being a successful filmmaker and finally getting his all-cat remake of CARRIE off the ground. One day on the job, he meets Cora (Sonja Kinski, of the Kinskis) the girl of his dreams. Michael’s inspired to clean his life up to make room for Cora, but their first date gets derailed when they run into Karma and the night spirals further and further from there.

The film was produced by Reich’s longtime collaborator turned lead actor Mike Pinkney and veteran genre producer Andrew van den Houten (The Ranger, Sadistic Intentions).  SHE’S ALLERGIC TO CATS co-stars Sonja Kinski (latest member of the Kinski acting dynasty) and Flula Borg (“Conan”, James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad).

Prior to SHE’S ALLERGIC TO CATS, Reich directed a number of music videos including work for My Chemical Romance, The Shins and Ryan Adams, and more punk collaborations with Yuck, No Age, and Bad Religion. More than a decade ago he began documenting the underground LA punk scene through experimental videos compiled on the now offline website Videothing, which LA Weekly applauded stating “Videothing.com Captures The Essence of L.A.’s Underground” and with some footage still available here.

Reich has also made short films that have premiered and screened at festivals such as Tribeca, SXSW, and the Fantasia International Film Festival. His debut feature film was funded solely with savings accumulated from working as a body double for one of the Daft Punk robots (he’s the gold one).
