Short Film Review: SELL YOUR BODY

The end of the year is quickly approaching, and I’ve watched hundreds of features and shorts, but up until now, I don’t think I knew which one was my favorite horror-comedy. That said, ALTER’S SELL YOUR BODY is perfection.

Directed and written by Jaanelle Yee, this millennial horror story centers around a med student dropout named Hannah (Nadira Foster-Williams) who is up to her knees and elbows in crippling debt. Desperate times call for desperate measures, so she hooks up with a couple from a dating app and mixes pleasure with pain. Got to make that money somehow, right?

This short is under 11 minutes and is a far better story than many of the features I’ve seen this year. I know that’s crazy, but I’m not even exaggerating. I loved everything about it. It is the perfect mix of horror and comedy that is unique and eerily relatable. Most of us have been to that breaking point where you’re down on your luck and the bills are piling up, and desperations start to sink in. Your mind starts to wonder…could I rob a bank? Sell my body? Hannah is all too familiar with this feeling and knows what she must do.

Nadira Foster-Williams delivers a witty and charming performance that is sure to make you laugh and smile. She’s so real and down to earth and because of her situation, you almost feel like you’ve known her for years. Her interaction with the married couple is hilariously uncomfortable and if you’ve ever been on a dating app, you know how often stuff like this happens. Well, at least the first half…

There are very minimal gore and blood but just enough to satisfy your need and more importantly they’re well done. It’s this exceptional makeup and special effects that make this short feel even more realistic.

SELL YOUR BODY is the first body of work I’ve seen from Jaanelle Yee, but after seeing what she can create in just a matter of 10 minutes, I can’t wait to see what she does next. Definitely a woman in horror to keep your eyes on! To check out SELL YOUR BODY, click on the YouTube link below!
