Alien fans rejoice at the opportunity to channel their inner Ripley and alienate some Xenomorphs in this roughly 12 minute VR experience produced by Pure Imagination in partnership with Fox. Two team firing squads descend into a mining facility on a rescue mission. When things go awry, as they always do, your primary objective shifts to focusing on escaping intact.
Fans of VR and the Alien franchise will greatly appreciate this experience. Entering in teams of two provides a very intimate setting that capitalizes on teamwork. Because it is free roaming, participants are able to move throughout the location and further immerse themselves in the story. Platforms, elevators, heat and cool air are utilized which adds to the sense of realness. Particularly, the technique used that shifts weight on the platform when under attack was superbly engineered. The lightweight gear used to implement the VR experience, lends itself to roaming the environment freely. The VR headset fit well and provided a clear image even when using glasses. Although the accuracy of the VR was sometimes compromised, particularly in the lack of movement of participants’ hands, it did not significantly detract from the experience.
In addition to the lightweight VR gear, one of the major highlights is the rifle you are equipped with. In addition to being incredibly accurate, the gun used in this experience is armed with grenades and a laser sight which improves the accuracy of your shooting. Although, the grenade did not appear to have the explosive impact one would expect, it was a nice addition when fighting the Xenomorphs.
Fans of the Alien franchise should expect to see many of the typical movie tropes in addition to a few easter eggs, as the experience draws heavily from the films. The Cryotube technique used at the beginning and at the end of the experience also fits nicely in the storyline and has the effect of immersing participants immediately in the experience.
Participants should expect to be extremely active as this experience requires you to defend yourself while under attack. Anxiety and claustrophobia may be present for some participants as you are required to be acutely aware of your surroundings at all times and are in some slightly confined spaces. Overall, this experience may not be as scary as one would anticipate. Participants must be at least 48 inches tall and 10 years of age to enjoy this event. More than anything, ALIEN: DESCENTis a thrilling and immersive journey through a planetary mining facility where participants are able to live out their fantasy as a marine blasting Xenomorphs and face huggers straight out of the films.
For $22 and a trip to the Outlets at Orange, you can experience ALIEN: DESCENT. Tickets can be purchased at https://www.aliendescent.com/.
