As the year comes to a close, we offer up our favorite horror films of 2017. Kicking things off is Curt Oglesbee who dives head first into the films that blew his mind during one of the best years for horror.
#5 – CREEP 2
CREEP 2 is everything I wanted from a Creep sequel. Though it isn’t as intense as the first film, the awkward humor is cranked up to 11. Mark Duplass is a saint.
#4 – SPLIT
Holy hell, who was expecting SPLIT to be this great? James McAvoy gives the performance of his career (which is saying a whole lot) and M. Night Shyamalan finally created a modern film that can be mentioned in the same breath as his earlier classics. Bring on Glass!
#3 – IT COMES AT NIGHT
I caught IT COMES AT NIGHT a bit later than most people, so I’d already heard from everyone how terrible and boring it is – but man, I just don’t understand that opinion. This is paranoia at its horrifying best.
#2 – GET OUT
Jordan Peele’s directorial debut is worthy of every bit of praise it has received. Socially relevant, terrifying, and brushed with Peele’s sense of humor, GET OUT is a modern masterpiece.
#1 – IT
IT delivered on every cinematic level for me. Sure, it’s a horror film, but there’s a sense of enchantment and nostalgia that I just can’t get enough of. The child characters are great, as are the actors who fill each role – and though Pennywise is a fantastic villain, they are the reason you’ll want to return to this film over and over. I fucking love this movie.
