Welcome witches and warlocks,

I had the great pleasure of attending Escape Room LA’s newest experience The Pyramid and thought I would offer up some thoughts for my fellow escape room enthusiasts. To give a bit of background, I will use the summary provided to me in the press materials:

“Set out on an expedition to a hidden jungle pyramid in search of The Mask of the Jade Warrior, a fabled lost treasure of the Mayans.”

First of all, I love that they did not use an Egyptian pyramid as the basis of the room, but instead went with a Mayan aesthetic. I feel tapping into this culture added a lot to the experience as they were able to structure puzzles around the calendar, artistic style, and blood sacrifices that made this ancient civilization so famous. From a less cultural and more media based standpoint, I also liked the theme because it made me feel like I was in an episode of Legends of the Hidden Temple in all the best sorts of ways.

Remember how I mentioned blood sacrifices above? Well, that actually sort of happened. That is right; there was a moment where we had to pour a bottle filled with mysterious red liquid into a basin that sat on a surface which looked quite a bit like an altar. In fact, this was not the only morbid bit of theming within these rooms as we also had a war themed painting, quite a few skulls, and the body of an ancient ruler still sitting on his throne. It was impressive that they did not shove the darkness aside, but fully embraced it throughout each room.

The design in these rooms was absolutely top notch from the sets to the interactive objects. Each of the elements worked in perfect harmony to give the feeling of us, the guests, being on an actual adventure. During our journey we traveled between quite a few distinctive rooms that were more spacious and loaded with detail than I had time to take in on my run through. In a way, the size and aesthetics of the rooms alone made this experience something worth repeating.

All of this does not even take into account the puzzles we had to solve to escape. Within the confines of the temple we were required to guide keys through a maze, figure out astrological symbols, correctly set a Mayan calendar, position a laser beam, and many more equally impressive tasks. I have to say that this was one of the most technologically advanced escape rooms I have ever had the pleasure of experiencing so it was impressive to see things run without a hitch. The way each of these various puzzles was incorporated into the overall theme was positively seamless, creating a memorable play through that put us right in the middle of the action.

All in all, this was a thrilling escape room that is sure to please lovers of adventure movies. The sets were absolutely top notch and they did a fantastic job of incorporating the puzzles into the overall theme. Fans of Legends of the Hidden Temple (1993) or Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981) should definitely give this a go.
