Movie Review: JUG FACE (2013)

Salutations my screechers, screamers, and scary dreamers,

Tonight’s tale of terror entitled “Jug Face” portrays a pregnant teenager trying to conceal her condition from her cult and save herself from sacrifice.

The opening credits are a nice innovation as they give us the background through animation and became one of the most important parts as they clue us in before the action starts. The story reveals more of these backwoods residents before we jump into the main events so though the opening scene is one of passion expect things to slow down for a fashion. Getting to know the characters well lulled me into this film’s spell and I was completely drawn in by this dark rumination before they provided any explanation. They put a lot of dark themes on display and I never felt they shied away which is good as it enhanced the plot and still left some food for thought.

Since the subject matter proved rather stark it helped that the actors all had a certain spark.  Given the sect’s cruel convictions I appreciated the performer’s depictions since they felt genuine and, as a result, helped to humanize this backwoods cult.  I have seen most of the performers in other places, but had a hard time placing their faces so not long after the movie began I felt as if I already knew this clan.

To be honest there are not any scares as the thing that drives affairs is the overarching sense of mood which from the beginning had me glued.  The score is simple yet perfectly placed as it further emphasises where our story is based. The backwoods setting was key to the tone as it emphasized the feeling of being alone and seeing it all from the hillbillies perspective made it even more effective.

Story/Concept: 2
Direction/Style: 2
Scares: 0
Atmosphere: 2
Rewatchability: 1
TOTAL: 7/10

In conclusion, this one does not focus on being bloody, but instead functions as a character study.

Stick to the shadows my fine friends.
